What a typical data center program looks like
Every program is built with your facilities and NOC leads. Here is a common starting point for a single site; multi-site operators repeat it per facility.
- Lightning: alert on cloud-to-ground strikes within 15 miles (verify backup power), warning within 8 miles (staff generators, hold non-essential maintenance), all-clear 30 minutes after the last strike inside the radius.
- Tornado and severe thunderstorm: site-specific warnings with expected arrival time when your building is in the storm's path; null-warning notification when the NWS polygon includes you but the storm does not.
- High wind and hail: warnings at your thresholds — for example, gusts above 50 mph for rooftop equipment and cooling plant, any hail over 1 inch for exposed condensers and vehicles — with onset and end timing.
- Flooding and utility-side weather: heavy-rain and flash-flood warnings for the site and access roads; large-scale wind and ice events warned days ahead so you can coordinate with your utility and fuel supplier.
- Delivery: portal and push alerts to the NOC, live phone call to the on-duty facilities lead for anything power-critical, text and email to security and on-call engineers — and an API feed into DCIM, BMS or your ticketing system.
- Wildfire: advisory when fire-weather conditions are expected to threaten the site or its access routes; warning when an active fire's location and expected spread put the site at risk, with timing and an all-clear.

Do you warn for lightning?
Yes. The National Weather Service issues no warnings for cloud-to-ground lightning. SiteWarn alerts you to strikes within a custom radius of your site with enough lead time to move people and protect equipment, and tells you when it is safe to resume.
How does this fit our emergency operating procedures?
Most operators map SiteWarn alert levels to existing EOP steps — for example, a lightning alert triggers generator verification and a warning triggers staffing and hold on maintenance. Warnings can be pushed into your DCIM, BMS or ticketing system by API so the runbook opens automatically.
Will this cause more generator runs, not fewer?
The opposite. Because warnings are drawn to your site rather than the whole polygon, and because you get a null-warning notification when an NWS warning doesn't reach you, operators typically see fewer precautionary runs and failovers, not more.
