What a typical camp program looks like
Every program is built with your director. Here is a common starting point for a residential camp; day camps and campgrounds adjust the overnight piece.
- Lightning: alert on cloud-to-ground strikes within 10 miles, warning within 8 miles (clear the waterfront, ropes and fields), all-clear 30 minutes after the last strike inside the radius — matching common camp and aquatics policy.
- Tornado and severe thunderstorm: property-specific warnings with expected arrival time, at the lead time it takes to shelter your whole camp (commonly 30–45 minutes); null-warning notification when the NWS polygon includes you but the storm does not.
- Overnight coverage: phone call to the on-duty director for any tornado, damaging-wind or flash-flood threat to cabin and tent areas between lights-out and wake-up.
- Flash flooding and high wind: warnings for creeks, low-water crossings and campsites near water; wind warnings at your threshold for tree-fall exposure in wooded cabin areas.
