Lightning warnings the NWS won't give you
The National Weather Service issues no warning for cloud-to-ground lightning — the hazard your students face most often on practice fields, playgrounds and at Friday night games. We alert coaches and campus staff in time to clear the field, and tell them when it's safe to go back out.

What a typical district program looks like
Every program is built with your safety director and athletic director. Here is a common starting point; each campus can carry its own thresholds and contacts.
- Lightning: alert on cloud-to-ground strikes within 10 miles of each campus, warning within 8 miles, all-clear 30 minutes after the last strike inside the radius — matching common athletic-association policy.
- Tornado and severe thunderstorm: campus-specific warnings with expected arrival time when a campus is in the storm's path, issued 30–45 minutes ahead; null-warning notification when the NWS polygon includes a campus but the storm does not threaten it.
- Hail and high wind: warnings at your thresholds — for example, any hail, or gusts above 50 mph — for buses in transit, portable buildings and outdoor events.
- Winter weather and flooding: 5–7 day initial lead time plus early-morning forecast guidance for delay and closure decisions, plus low-water-crossing and route hazards where they apply.
- Heat (WBGT): advisories and warnings on Wet Bulb Globe Temperature at the thresholds your athletic association and district policy use — practice modification, rest breaks, cancellation, recess indoors — per campus; heat index available if your policy calls for it.
- Wildfire: advisory when fire-weather conditions are expected to threaten the site or its access routes; warning when an active fire's location and expected spread put the site at risk, with timing and an all-clear.
- Delivery: push alerts to the safety director and principals, a live phone call to the district's designated decision-maker, text and email to coaches and transportation, portal access for the operations center — and an API feed into your mass-notification or emergency-management system if you have one.

Do you warn for lightning?
